Zambezi Wildlife Trust – Green Season Happenings

Over the course of the green season, the Zambezi Wildlife Trust has been busy engaging with the local communities that subsist on the outskirts of the park, promoting education and conservation with the school kids from Mugurameno School in Chiawa Village, and adults alike. There was also occasion to celebrate the finished house, funded and built by the ZWT for the School’s head teacher.

With lots of laughter and the joyful colours of ladies’ chitenge cloth, the village came together to make a truly exciting and inspiring event with young and old enthusiastically getting into the business of sweeping and clearing, picking up litter and working together as a community. The officers working with the Trust spent time connecting with the kids, teaching them about the beauty of the flora and fauna around their home, clearing rubbish from around the village and instilling a fundamental pride in their community and their country.

In the bush, the kids saw the cruel first-hand effect of a poacher’s snare wire on an bull elephant’s trunk. They watched two lions laze in the morning muggy haze, horn bills and fish eagles – the national emblem of Zambia, soaring through the verdant tree canopy. There was even a glimpse of the superbly smart dazzle of zebra near the Kayila Airstrip.

The safari season – what we at Ana Tree Collections live for – is fast approaching and soon we will be back in the bush, getting camp ready for 2020’s guests. Who knows what will be on the cards: you never know, Robert, one of our expert guides has been talking about spotting a flying aardvark – maybe this year will be the year, now that everyone’s got 2020 vision?!
